It never hurts to do research on any subject, but to some degree the debate doesn’t matter. The fact is, everyone’s different and what works for one person, may not work for another. Statistics for or against the success of quitting smoking via vaping are irrelevant if it’s a method that works for you—and countless people have successfully quit smoking by switching to vaping.
Be Prepared for an Upfront Investment
There are a few things you should be prepared for when making the transition from smoke to vapor. While the research on the subject has found that vaping is statistically considerably less expensive than cigarettes, the upfront investment costs more than a pack of cigarettes. Although, in a lot of places, it’s not going to cost more than a carton.
To start, you’ll need an e-cigarette device, which range in price from around $10 to close to $100, and a supply of e-liquid (vape juice) to vaporize with that device. According to those who’ve successfully switched from cigarettes to vaping, grab a good bit of vape juice in that first investment.
Stock Up and Choose Variety

That’s generally a good policy, although it can backfire: Too much nicotine can result in nausea and other side effects that have been known to turn off those new to vaping.
For your first purchase, choose several small bottles of vape juice of varying nicotine content, from low to high, each in a flavor that sounds good to you. The most important first step is to find a nicotine content that is enough to satisfy post-smoking cravings, but isn’t too much. When you’ve found your nicotine sweet spot, experiment with vape juice flavors and find the ones you like. And if you relapse to cigarettes, it’s not a vape-ending failure, it’s a learning experience. Try to identify the trigger responsible for grabbing that cig and have your e-cigarette on hand to grab instead.
